How to attract birds to your feeder

Providing food is a great way to support local birds, and as a result, the wider ecosystem. But how do you attract birds to a feeder in the first place? This guide will provide useful tips on how to make your feeders as popular as possible.

Types of Bird Food:

Firstly, it is important to consider which birds are local to you. This way, you can figure out which foods are most likely to attract their attention.

  • Sunflower seeds - Eaten by many different species, these are a great option for attracting birds. They are high in fat and provide lots of energy, so are a great all-year-round option.
  • Niger seeds - These tiny seeds are popular with finches, buntings, redpolls, juncos, and pine siskins. They are high in oil, so also provide lots of energy for birds.
  • Peanuts - Another all-year-round option, peanuts are extremely nutritious and are popular with many species including blue jays, finches, and woodpeckers.
  • Suet - Made from animal fat, suet is a great option for winter feeding. Birds such as chickadees, woodpeckers, and nuthatches particularly enjoy it.

Types of Feeder:

Using this information, you can then choose the correct type of feeder:

  • Tubular feeders - These are the most popular type of feeder, and are preferred by smaller birds. This is due to the small ports which larger birds find uncomfortable to cling to.
  • Platform feeders - Great for species of all sizes, including ground feeders, but may also attract squirrels and other wildlife.
  • Suet feeders - They come in many different designs, depending on if you are feeding suet blocks, balls, or grains.

Where to place your feeder:

  • It is recommended that you place feeders near some sort of cover, such as a tree or shrub, so that birds feel safe when they are feeding.
  • However, ensure the foliage is not too thick as predators may be able to hide in it. The feeder also needs to be visible so that birds can see it and access it easily.
  • A height of 5-6 feet is optimal, as this is high enough to deter ground predators.

Maintaining your feeder:

Not only is a clean feeder more attractive, it can actually benefit birds' health by reducing the spread of diseases, as well as preventing mold and bacteria from building up.

  • Clean your feeder every two weeks, or more often if necessary.
  • Use washing-up liquid and hot water to scrub your feeder, then rinse and leave to dry.
  • Discard of old, moldy seed as this is can be harmful if consumed.

Provide water and shelter:

A nearby water source can make your garden even more attractive to birds, as they regularly need water for drinking and bathing. Clean water sources regularly, and use hot water to melt any ice.

Shelter in the form of trees, shrubs, or birdhouses will help birds to feel safe in your garden and provide nesting spots.

By following these steps, you can easily attract a diverse range of birds to your feeders.
